Friday, June 20, 12:30 -2 PM, THE ART OF HAPPINESS: Wendy Treynor, Ph.D.,

cancer survivor (2005), scientist of human emotion, thought, and behavior (2004), inspirational speaker, author, and life coach will share her perspective, as both scientist and human being, on how to create a life worth living: how we can cultivate a sense of joy, peace, freedom, and meaning in our lives, even if everything we thought would be is not (and may never be). She will begin by sharing her cancer story and conclude with a demonstration and discussion/Q&A. June 2008 Workshops and Events

Mondays, 12-1 pm, Pilates Drop-in class with Misty Anderson, from Vital Pilates Studio: Pilates helps people move, bend and stretch with benefits such as increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing and a stronger core. Misty's classes will be ON-HOLD from June 16th through July 21st; classes resume July 28th.

Throughout the year: Every Saturday @ 11 AM “Fit and Well Worth It” at End Results Fitness Training Center, 5205 PCH, St. D, Torrance, 90505; 310-378-4866 Fitness Training for Wellness Community participants, cancer survivors and their support persons. Call to schedule a session; you don't have to have any previous experience or fitness training. Must RSVP 24 hours in advance; space limited.

Every Tuesday, 5:15 to 6 pm: Relaxation and Visualization with a TWC facilitator; Learn with others the fundamentals of practicing and using techniques like relaxation and visualization for reducing stress. This is a drop-in.

Monday, June 16, 6 pm Envelope of Life: Jan Dennis
In emergency medical situations, one of the greatest obstacles facing Paramedics is a lack of information regarding the medical history, medical conditions, and prescribed medications for the patient requiring emergency treatment. The “Envelope of Life” is a program designed to provide emergency medical personnel with essential medical information for the patients they are treating. This program has proven to be of great benefit in the proper emergency care of the sick and injured. The Fire Department endorses the concept of the “Envelope of Life” program, and is supportive of the efforts of the Neptunian Women’s Club in implementing it in our community.

at Torrance Memorial West Tower Auditorium. Speaker is Ramen Mirhashemi, M. D., with Gynecologic Oncology Associates.  Learn about ways to lower cervical cancer risk; Offered in collaboration with the American Cancer Society Los Angeles Coastal Cities Unit and The Wellness Community South Bay Cities. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Saturday, June 21, 10 am – 1 pm: Art & Healing- Pamela Stephan, MFT and RArt;
Pamela is a Wellness Community Facilitator and an Art Therapist. The creative arts are gentle therapies that are especially helpful during difficult times, when one might feel overwhelmed with diagnoses and treatment plans. It is good to be in a place where there is no confrontation, labeling, or definition in order to find a quiet and healing space inside.

Susan Goodlerner & Christine Petti: Signs of Skin Cancer, Prevention, Selecting Sunscreens; Cosmetic Treatment 6-7:30pm Presented in a panel format, Dr. Goodlerner will present information on identifying the signs of skin cancer, prevention, selecting appropriate sunscreens, and subsequent treatments; Dr Petti will discuss newly FDA approved Rhytec™ portrait for treatment of pre-cancerous skin lesions. Q & A will follow.

Monday, July 14, 2008, 10-11:30am, Look Good…Feel Better: The American Cancer Society, in collaboration with The Wellness Community – South Bay Cities, invites you to register for a free program that teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment, to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. Class size is limited so please register early.

substituting for
Barbara Abercrombie; this monthly program offers everyone affected by cancer, participants, family and friends ways to express themselves through writing. Barbara is a favorite with participants and teaches at the UCLA Writer’s Program and is the author of many books. Drop in.

Monday, July 21, 2008, 6-7:30pm Emotional Aspects of Cancer;Richard Palmer, M.D., Board Certified in Psychiatry; Professional Advisory Board Member (PAB)  Dr. Palmer will talk about the emotional aspects of cancer for patients and caregivers, as well as psychiatric medications that are useful in treating depression and anxiety. Q & A will follow.

 

Monday, July 21, 2008 6-7pm Relaxation and Visualization, Christine Winkler, PhD,  
a Wellness Community facilitator and creator of  which is offered frequently at The Wellness Community. Dr. Winkler will present the many healthful benefits of practicing R&V, and will guide the group through a session.
